Week 8 Discussion

Kwon mentions several stories about Chinese Korean workers in South Korea in his book, “ the work of waiting.” This book changes my mind on immigration policies in Korea. Before this article, I only thought immigration would receive unequal treatment and suffers from the harsh living condition. However, this article makes me dig into the emotion of these immigration workers. At that time, the Chinese Korean workers come to a foreign land, leaving their families home. It reminds me of my experience as an international student. When I first come to the United States from China, I often miss my family members. As my roommate describes to me that” Luke is always on the phone with his parents.” I believe those Chinese Korean workers are doing the same thing when they first came to Korea. However, unlike me, who can easily communicate with my family through, modern technology, those poor workers could only express themselves through a letter, which might take months to get to their loved ones.

What is more, all the students, professors, TAs treat me well, compared to those poor workers who have to work extremely long hours and receives little payment. They need support from family members, which are thousands of miles away from them. I can not help to feel sorry for those workers. To put everything into a map, I think we must consider the migration worker chronologically and regionally. Specifically, we need to pay attention to the role of Capitalism.
